The National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) is excited to announce the development of a new course to address the gap in using land use planning solutions to reduce risk efforts to mitigate hazards – MGT-474 Mitigating Hazards with Land Use Solutions. Where and how land is used and developed can greatly influence a community’s vulnerability to natural hazards, especially to protect against potential flood and hurricane disasters. Land use tools have rarely been used in hazard mitigation planning in the past and tools such as comprehensive plans, zoning, and development regulations can guide land use to reduce risks and mitigate hazards.
MGT-474 is in the final piloting stages of curriculum development, and aims to address the core capabilities of Planning, Community Resilience and Long-Term Vulnerability Reduction, among others. The course includes strategies for the integration of hazard mitigation and land-use efforts and on choosing land-use solutions that address different natural hazard challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to work with tools at various levels from community-scale tools, such as comprehensive plans and hazard mitigation plans, to site-scale solutions such as setbacks and land acquisition. The overarching goal is to provide professionals engaged in hazard mitigation with additional tools to make communities safer.
NDPTC continues to refine and improve its extensive course catalog to provide the Whole Community the most current knowledge and skills to plan and prepare for natural hazards. NDPTC’s catalog includes several courses that highlight the value of planning principles and strategies to emergency management and hazard mitigation.
