Training offered by FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) has benefitted thousands of nursing students in the Southeast.
The CDP works closely with 10 colleges and universities – including three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) – and provides students with training which helps them meet their school’s graduation requirements.
The CDP’s resident Healthcare Emergency Response Operations for CBRNE Incidents (HERO) Course teaches students how to care for victims of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive (CBRNE) incidents. The students are taught how to safely don, work in, and doff personal protective equipment; basic decontamination procedures; and how to triage casualties.
The CDP’s Emergency Medical Response Awareness for CBRNE Incidents (EMRA) Course is taken virtually by some students and on campus by others, prior to taking HERO. EMRA teaches responders how to triage and treat CBRNE victims.
To date, more than 4,400 nursing students have completed this unique training.
